Kaos (at FOLD)

Occasional anything-goes club for left-field lovers of techno, started in 2003 by the inspired Lee Adams, who first staged his fabulously mad party for trannies, tattooed loverboys and fashionistas at Madame JoJo's in Soho before moving east, with its long-term spell at Stunners in Limehouse constituting a certain high. From 2014 Kaos ruled at Electrowerkz in Islington — with a one-off at the Flying Dutchman in Peckham in May 2014— until 2022, when it checked into FOLD, a mostly queer, artist-led, community-driven club and arts space new to the scene in 2018 and located in a suitably remote, wasteland-like area of Canning Town, east London. (The former printing works was transformed into a club mecca by a trio of techno-loving men from Georgia, who still oversee it.) The ethos has changed considerably. Less of an anything-goes party night, Kaos now accommodates a new generation of serious techno devotees who (literally) stand and shake before the altar where top DJs transmit hard-core sounds while state-of-the-art lighting beams at their followers. There are very few nooks and crannies at this simply but elegantly designed venue, but there's a generously sized outdoor terrace overlooked by a towering electricity pylon. Very atmospheric.
